Dr. James D. Collins Jr, 77, of Waterloo died Thursday, March 11, 2010 in Clearwater, Florida. He was born June 28, 1932 in Gillette, Wyoming the son of James D. Sr, and Beulah Ihnen Collins. Dr. Collins graduated from Omaha South High School in 1950 and received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska in 1954. He graduated from the University of Nebraska College Of Medicine in 1958, served as an Intern in Tacoma Washington from 1958 to 1959 and his Residency at Madison General Hospital from 1959 to 1963. He served for two years at Carswell Air Force Base in Texas. Dr. Collins married Margaret Weber April 26, 1958 in Norfolk, Nebraska. He was a Physician at Allen Memorial Hospital for 27 years retiring in 1992. Dr. Collins was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ. He served on the Board of Directors for the Waterloo Public Library and was appointed by Governor Branstad to the Iowa Medical Examiner’s Board of Directors in 1991 serving as its Chairman from 1994 to 1997. In 1986 Dr. Collins received the Ben Whitaker award from the Iowa Medical Society for Medical Education. He was a founding member of the Black Hawk Tennis Club and started the Retired Physicians Group at Allen Memorial Hospital. Dr. Collins’ interests included cheering for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, photographing wildlife and tennis. Dr. Collins is survived by his wife, son Jim (Ann Woessner) of Shoreview, Minnesota; daughter Brenda (Todd Mavis) of Poway, California; and son Steve (Lynn Svoboda) of Clarendon Hills, Illinois. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren: James, Mason, and Sean Collins, Lauren Woessner, Lindsay and Kylie Mavis, Rachel and Mitchell Collins; a cousin Susie Schotte of Nebraska and loving nieces and nephews and their families. He is preceded in death by his parents, uncle Robert and aunt June Ihnen, and brother Jerry Collins.
