Biography Information

Goldie E. Boleyn, 92, of Waterloo, died at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Wednesday, September 21, 2011.

Goldie Eve Willhite was born December 24, 1918, in Yukon, Missouri, the daughter of Jesse and Alta Mae Boster Willhite. Goldie was one of seven children to grow up on her family’s farm, nine miles from the road.  She and her brothers and sisters would walk or ride a horse thru the woods and over the creek to school.  She graduated from high school in Sommersville, MO, and taught school for a time.  John Deere in Waterloo provided jobs for brothers, first Glen, Dewey and Hewey. Goldie followed them to Waterloo and it was in Waterloo that she met Vern O. Boleyn, and they were married September 14, 1940.  Goldie worked for a laundry service for awhile, but soon Vern and she opened Boleyn Grocery on Edward Street near Longfellow School.  The grocery took seven days a week, and for nine years they lived in the back room of the store. After Vern’s death July 28, 1988, Goldie continued running the store, retiring in 1996 after fifty years.  She even turned her love of collecting antiques to an addition to the store offerings when she sold her finds out of the back room.

Goldie is survived by her daughter Beverly and her husband James Toppin of Apache Junction, AZ and Oelwein; three grandchildren: Michelle Lynn Tucker of Waterloo, Craig Eugene (Robin) Arnold of Cedar Falls, and Rodney Dean (Robin) Toppin of Surprise, AZ; six great grandchildren: Adam and Jessica Arnold, Jennifer and Joseph Tucker, Brandon and Ashley Toppin; two great great grandchildren: Haley Lynn Tucker and Joseph Holt; brother Lennis (LoRetha) Willhite of Waterloo; sister Cleo Wait of Waterloo.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son Ronald Eugene Boleyn,  brothers Glen, Dewey and Hewey Willhite, and sister Jewell Oman.

To Goldie's family,

I am sorry to hear of your loss. Your mother was a wonderful person; I used to come into the store they ran on Edwards Street many times and it was always a joy to talk with her. When the store closed, of course I lost touch with her but never forgot her.

I want to send condolences and let you know she was a person that once you met her you would never forget her. You are so blessed to have had her in your lives for 90 years. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family as you go through the next few days.

Sincerely, Gloria Stigler

Beverly, I was saddened to read about Goldie's passing. The store on Edwards was such a big part of my childhood. I remember going there to the meat counter to see your dad, and buying the penny candy at the front of the store. Grandma and Lucille lived just across the street and we lived on Center. I even still have the little prizes out of the gum machine!! Mom just passed away too on the 18th, she just turned 90. The old neighborhood just isn't what it used to be. It was a pleasure to have known you and your folks.

I was so sorry to hear about Goldie. Seems like she lived a full life. And I am sure your family has many wonderful memories of her. At times like this the Bible comforts me so much. Jesus said in John 5:28&29 there would come a time when those in the memorial tombs would hear his voice and come out. This would also be at a time when Revelation 21:3&4 says there will be no more tears, pain or death. This would all happen when God's Kingdom comes, the same kingdom that Jesus taught us to pray for in the Lord's Prayer. What a wonderful prospect for Goldie and all those in the memorial tombs now. We express our deepest sympathy. We hope you find comfort in this time of loss.

Deepest sympathy to your family. I remember going in to the store back in the mid 60s while going to Longfellow. Your parents will be missed. God Bless.

So sorry to hear of your loss. I remember Goldie from the several trips my grandparents (Glen and Rita) took me to to her store when I was a small child... because I was so young and there were so many of my grandfather's brothers and sisters to remember... I remembered her simply as "the candy lady" - she would always give us several pieces of candy when we visited. She was always such a happy, smiling person - my thoughts are with you and your family.
