Biography Information
Eldred J. Harman, 90, of Waterloo, formerly of Perry, died at Lakeview Landing of Friendship Village on Friday, September 30, 2011 of Complications of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. He was born March 26, 1921 in Plymouth, son of Walter and Vera Hodson Harman. Mr. Harman graduated from Plymouth High School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Husbandry from Iowa State University in 1947.
Mr. Harman served in the US Army during WWII in France and Germany and guarded POW’s in Algona, Iowa. He married Donna L. Wheeler on June 24, 1950 at First Presbyterian Church in Waterloo.
Mr. Harman went to work for Rath Packing in the fall of 1947 as a hog buyer; he was integral in establishing the Iowa Pork Co. in Perry in 1962, which later became IBP. In 1967, he went to work for Home Federal Savings and Loan in Perry later becoming its President before retiring in 1983 after its merger with American Federal Savings and Loan of Des Moines.
Mr. Harman was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Waterloo; Kiwanis Clubs in Perry and Waterloo, Past President of Dallas Co. Hospital Board in Perry, served on the national board for Pi Kappa Phi, and numerous other philanthropic activities.
He is survived by his wife Donna Harman, Waterloo; son James R. Harman, Johnston; daughter Jayne (David) Hintz, Lowden; two grandchildren: Aaron James Hintz and Sarah Ann Harman; brother Don (Nadine) Harman, Marshalltown; sisters‑in‑law: Elaine Harman, Mason City and Cory Harman, LeMars and many nieces and nephews. I am so very sorry to learn of Eldred's passing. I so enjoyed getting to know you both during my employment at UNI and I will always treasure the many fond memories I have of my visits with the two of you. I always loved it when Eldred came to visit!! :)

My prayers are with you in this time of loss. As an member of Pi Kappa Phi at ISU in the late 80's early 90's, I have unending gratitude for what Eldred did for his fraternity and for me. I'm sure his devotion to his family was just as great. A great man has found his way to the Chapter Eternal.
