Biography Information

Larry Eugene Ainley, 70, quietly and peacefully passed away on October 30, 2011 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home after a four-year fight with cancer.

He was born June 15, 1941 in Waterloo. Larry was the first son of David and Esther Ainley and was joyfully welcomed into their home. He graduated from West High in 1960 and attended the University of Northern Iowa. In school, he was active in baseball, basketball, and football at West High School. Larry received the Clyde Artus Most Valuable Athlete Award in 1960. As an adult, Larry was active in athletics, both as a spectator and a participant. He especially enjoyed the Hawkeyes.

He was employed by John Deere Product Engineering Center for twenty-two years.  Later he delved into several entrepreneur projects with business consulting, ownership, and development. This evolved to a career in real estate with the earliest local franchise and ownership of RE/MAX Real Estate. His family was the most important part of his life.  He enjoyed the family fishing trips to Ball Club Lake in Itasca County, Minnesota, and swimming in the family pool.

Those left to cherish his precious memories are his partner in life Colleen O’Connell of Waterloo; daughter Denise Gabbert and her husband Darren of Barnett, Missouri; three grandchildren: Ashley (Eugene) Newswanger of Barnett, Chris (Crystal) Lanpher of Millersburg, Indiana, and Josiah Gabbert of Barnett; two great-grandchildren: Logan Newswanger of Barnett and Stephanie Lanpher of Millersburg; brother Ron Ainley and his wife Jane of Dubuque; and nephew Brian Ainley of Goose Lake, Iowa.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents.
