Biography Information

Jerry A. Vaala, 69, of Waterloo, Iowa died at Allen Memorial Hospital on Sunday, December 18, 2011 from complications of lymphoma cancer.

Jerry Allen Vaala was born April 28, 1942 in New Hampton, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Alice (Anderson) Vaala.  Jerry graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1959.

He married Charlene Bannister on March 27, 1965 in Preston, Minnesota.

Jerry worked at Titus Mfg. as an office representative for 14 years and then he was a machinist at Viking Pump for 25 years, retiring in April 2004.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he was a deacon for many years. He also was a blood donor for 25 years. Jerry belonged to the Early Ford V-8 Club and loved classic cars.

Jerry is survived by his wife Charlene; daughters: Terry (Joel) Osmundson of Washburn and Angie (Mike) Andrews of Waterloo; sons: Craig (Helida) Vaala of Waterloo, Scott Vaala of Dubuque, and Jeff (Michele) Shimek of Austin, Texas; 14 grandchildren: Shannon (James) Henson, Aaron (Sharra) McNally, Jessica (Cam) Behnke, Ryan McNally, Cassandra McNally, Ashley Vaala, Travis Vaala, Sydney Osmundson, Anna Osmundson, Alyssa Andrews, Kayla Dempster, Samantha Dempster, Marcus Winter, and LaToiya Bjorklund; 10 great‑grandchildren: TaberLee Vaala, Kylee Stubberud, Jaden Henson, Devan Henson, Carter Olson, Emerlyn McNally, Ja’Mya Clark, Isaiah Clark, Jada Wynter and Jalen Wynter; and sister Connie (Jim) Bedard of Washburn.

He is preceded in death by his brother Harlan Anderson and grandsons: Jason Hendershot and Dillan J. and Billy J. Vaala.

Char, I only knew you and Jerry through the V-8 club and always missed you both when you weren't there. Jerry always brightened up the room with both his glowing smile and his infectuous enthusiasm. And you always complemented his positive attitude. Ellen and I are truly sorry for you losing your partner.

Char, We were so sad to hear of Jerry's passing. I didn't realize he was that sick. We are in Florida and my sister called me. Jerry and I had so many fun times together when we were growing up. Our prayers go out to you and the family.
