Your Mother's father, George Jensen and our father, Anton Jensen, were brothers. As you probably know, George, the eldest of six boys, emigrated to the U.S. before WW1 and served as a major with the U.S. forces. The other five growing up in what was then the German-occupied Schlesweig region (Denmark) were required to serve in the German army.
Anton was the only one remaining after the war and in 1924, he and our mother, Jorgine and our brother, Laurence, emigrated to the states, sponsored by George. They farmed north of Des Moines and often visited with Uncle George and Aunt Mae. Many times our mother spoke of how good Aunt Mae was to her.
As the youngest of Anton's six children, I only met Homer, Robert, Ann and Doris as a child and did not know them much. However, my older siblings, Laurence, Kathryn, Ken, Ted and Harold, told me of the fun times they shared with their Des Moines cousins. They remembered Uncle George's 'big' home and the wonderful park across the street where they all played together.
Katy especially has spoken often of her cousin, Doris. They were good friends during their childhoods and Katy truly admired your mother's tennis skill. She even kept a scrapbook of all Doris' achievements.
Katy, Ken, Ted and Harold reside in central Iowa, I live in Dubuque, and Laurence (still in excellent health at age 90) lives in southern California. All of this history, Michael, is to let you know, that while all of George's children are gone now, you still have lots of family nearby. We want you to know that if you are ever down our way, you would be very welcome in our homes.
Finally, and most sincerely, we send our deepest sympathy to you and your family on the loss of your mother.
