Biography Information

Winona M. "Winnie" Rosenkrans, 96, of Waterloo, died at Ravenwood Nursing & Rehabilitation Center on Saturday, February 18, 2012, of natural causes.

Winona Marie DeVore was born December 4, 1915 in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of George H. Sr. and Leota Debe DeVore. She graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1934.

Winnie married Frank P. Rosenkrans on December 10, 1936 in Waterloo.

She worked at Allen Hospital for 20 years as a secretary and later a ward secretary, retiring in 1978. Winnie was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Winnie and Frank were avid campers and members of the Good Sam Camping Club, occasionally serving as officers in the club. For many years they wintered in Biloxi, Mississippi, spending the cold months with Frank Jr. and his family. She was a devoted homemaker and enjoyed doing crafts, sewing, baking and canning. Winnie loved growing plants, flower gardening; and in later years, she lovingly looked after her toy poodle, Mr. Bentley.

Winnie is preceded in death by her husband Frank Sr. in July 1982, son Frank Jr. in June 1998, granddaughter Kristi Crouch in April 2002, grandson Wade Clark in February 2012, great-grandson Adam Clark, and little companion Mr. Bentley.

Family surviving her include son Gary and his wife Nadine of Waterloo; daughter Janet Clark and her husband Larry of Waterloo; son Ken and his wife Francene of Pleasanton, California; daughter‑in‑law Judy Rosenkrans of Biloxi; 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Winona had a sweet disposition and never had a cross word for anyone! She will be greatly missed by us and her Ravenwood family with whom she lived since 2004.

Ken, I wish I could be there in person to express my sympathy for your mother, as I have great respect for her. I have many fond memories of her from fried chicken after church, to Tinker and Midnight. Plus she was one great Pinochle player. She will always be a bright star from my past. You and your family have my deepest sympathy.

Our prayers are with you. Winnie is remembered fondly as such a nice person. She always had a lovely smile and a nice welcome for me (or others) as we visited her in Ravenwood. Sorry I did not have the opportunity to get to know her before that--But Dora Mae, Virginia, Lola and others speak highly of her!

Love and prayers--and prayers for you all, and especially Janet, as February has been such a very tough month on your whole family.
Rev. Sheryl Campbell , February 23, 2012
