Biography

Michael Ira DeLaHunt, 81, of Reinbeck and formerly of Waterloo, died at Mary Greeley Medical Center's Israel Family Hospice House in Ames on Thursday, January 11, 2018.

He was born on November 5, 1936 in Cedar Rapids; the son of Paul and Isabelle Robbins DeLaHunt.

Mike married Lupe Aguilera and they later divorced. He married Joanne Slessor on February 26, 1983 in Reinbeck, they were later divorced.

He graduated from Manly High School in 1954 and attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN.

Mike was a retail shoe merchandiser for Wohl Shoe Co. for 16 years, he worked 8 years as shoe department manager at JC Penney in Waterloo; he later was a life insurance agent with Lutheran Mutual Life; Michael retired from National Bank in Waterloo.

He was a former member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and the Exchange Club of Waterloo. Mike recently attended the Reinbeck United Methodist Church. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels, was a model airplane enthusiast, and loved to travel.

Mike was a strong-willed, outgoing man who could talk to anyone. He had an uncanny ability to make people laugh, even in the most difficult of situations. He often could be found telling a good story, whether it was true or false. He and his family moved all over the country before settling in Waterloo. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards and games and making many memorable trips to Minnesota to go fishing and to Arizona for Thanksgiving. He also visited the state capital in Des Moines to advocate for AARP, which he was very passionate about. Mike always made time in his many travels to enjoy ice cream, because "it fills in the cracks."

Survivors include a son, Brett (Terri) DeLaHunt of Waterloo; three daughters, Amy Pfeifer of Rockton, IL, Paula (John) Adams of Tempe, AZ, and April (Ray) Deojay of Boone; former wives, Lupe DeLaHunt of Mason City and Joanne DeLaHunt of Reinbeck; six grandchildren and 11 great‑grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mike and I sat together all through school years.  I always looked forward to our conversations at reunions, and I will miss him.  A great guy.  RIP Mike.
