It was with great sadness to hear of Bryan's passing.  We enjoyed many good times together growing up in the Highland neighborhood as well as being East High teammates in basketball and baseball, with Bryan's dad as our assistant coach.  With the many miles apart over the years, we had not been in close touch but I would hear Bryan's name from time-to-time in conversations with family and friends from Waterloo.  My heartfelt condolences to Peg and the Joens family during this difficult time.  Rock in Peace, my brother!

Was a unique teacher. He held his students in high regard. Knew how to relate to them as well.  He made me appreciate teachers. Will be missed. One of my favorite teachers when I attended East. Class of 92.

Wow!  Brian Joens!   My condolences to your family.    You were a good man.  The world has lost a good soul who did his best to give back to the community.   I will always remember our times as brothers as football players for the East High Trojans.   We could not have gotten where we went without his great help and leadership!.     We all know you are in a better place,  looking down and watching over all of us.  Don't worry my friend,  we will all be together again,  someday,  playing ball and loving families,  together.

you will always be remembered and loved.

    Bless your family

What a shock to hear of Bryan's passing - I'm sorry for the hole in the hearts of your family - it must feel, right now anyway, like a gap that will never be filled.  From our elementary school days through high school, Bryan was always the steady friend, happy to let others stand in the spotlight. (I may add, this was often a smart move. :-) Time has slipped away, and now 38 years separates us from walking the halls of East High; however, the memories and photos are kind reminders of how lucky we were to know him.

I would to extend my deepest sympathies to Peggy and the entire family on the loss of Bryan. He was such a great friend as well as a great classmate. We had numerous good times we with all of our friends. It's amazing to think after 40 years there is a group of friends that still remain close even with miles of separation for some of the group. Bryan will be truly missed by myself and numerous others. RIP my friend. Until we meet again.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Joens family. It has been an honor to have had Bryan as a dear friend and teammate. Integrity, heart, a feisty competitor, caring and kind, with a real respect for those who shared the same values. Though miles apart, we were able to keep creating memories through the years ...(my apologies Peg), that will always bring a smile to my face. Along with other close friends and family, I was blessed to see him on Friday in which his wit and humor was on full display, despite his condition. That is the spirit I will carry with me! “Go Rest High On That Mountain” Big Fella!  Love Ya!

And oh.... Did anyone notice the Steelers won big Sunday??

To the Family, Friends and Loved ones of Mr. Bryan Joens, May the Mercy and Grace of God be ever present to be a comfort to you. I attended East High with Bryan (class of 1980) and remember his big wide smile. He had a quiet, observant kind of demeanor and he was always so polite and friendly. I often seen him on the basketball courts or on the football field coaching with  the same passion and love for the games as I saw he had for the students he taught. A great man who has left a legacy that will be talked about through the halls of East High for years to come. A legacy carried on through the many people whose lives he has touched. Forever my friend.
