There will be a committal at Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery


Memorials may be made to the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra, UNI Suzuki Music Program, or Cedar Valley Hospice in lieu of flowers


Carol Madonna Hinson Driver, 73, lost her 16-year battle with multiple myeloma on Monday, June 26, 2017 which she fought with courage and an amazing, positive attitude.  She was born in Waterloo, Iowa on May 18, 1944 the first child of William Henry Hinson and Charlotte Anne Burton Hinson.  She graduated from West High School in 1962 and received a BA in Secondary Education from the University of Iowa in 1966.  She was a member of the Phi Upsilon Omicron home economics scholastic society and Delta Gamma sorority.  She received a second BA in Spanish and Education from U.N.I. in 1998, graduating summa cum laude.  She received the Purple and Old Gold Award and was a member of the Scholastic Spanish Society.


Carol married Dr. Craig Warren Driver on August 28, 1965, a marriage that lasted over 51 years. Carol and Craig met for the first time in kindergarten at Kingsley School in Waterloo.  They began dating while attending West High School and married after their junior year at the University of Iowa.  They remained in Iowa City until Craig graduated from the College of Dentistry, and then returned to Waterloo.  While in Iowa City, Carol taught home economics at Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids and later was manager of “Diet Maids” for The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.  In Waterloo, Carol was a home maker and very active in the Waterloo community.  She served as Past President of UNI Suzuki Board, Kingsley PTA, and Waterloo Dental Wives.  She was a leader of various Brownie and Girl Scout units, a Sustaining Member of Waterloo/Cedar Falls Jr. League and chairman of their first cookbook, Buttercups and Brandy.  She was a parent volunteer in classrooms for many years, active in Chapter IX, PEO for over 50 years, and Visiting Nurses Board Member for 10 years.  She was an active member of First Congregational United Church of Christ for over 40 years serving on the Boards of Trustees, Deacons, and Endowment Committee.  She taught Sunday school and worked on Meals on Wheels.  She was a Substitute teacher for many years in Waterloo at all schools, in most subjects and grade levels, especially enjoying Spanish and 6th grade language arts. She was a volunteer ESL mentor and Spanish tutor.  She was also a family host of several foreign exchange students.


She is survived by her husband; son, Scott Driver (Ariel) of Phoenix, AZ; son, Jeffrey Driver (Gyobanna) of Waterloo, IA, daughter, Charlotte Backens (Josh) of Phoenix, AZ; three grandchildren: Luke Backens (8), Madelyn Driver (4), and Liam Backens (2); brother: Richard Hinson (Jane) of Malibu, CA; nieces Ashley Hinson Arenholz of Cedar Rapids, IA; Piper Hinson of Los Angeles, CA; nephew Blake Hinson of New York, NY.


She was preceded in death by parents William Henry Hinson (1997) and Charlotte Anne Burton Hinson (2004).
