After graduating from high school, Clarence moved to California and worked for the city of Redding for four years until he was drafted in 1950. He went back to Germany in 1953 as a civilian to get married and came back to Iowa where he farmed for 12 years in West Gate (near Sumner). In 1965 in started working for Sears where he worked until his retirement in 1992. He later worked as a driver for various car dealerships in the Cedar Valley for several years.

He attended Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church for many years.

Clarence is survived by his wife, Marga of Waterloo; two sons, Tommy Kirchhoff of Cedar Falls, and Steven Kirchhoff (missing since 1978); four grandchildren, Jamie Shimek of Garland, Texas, Lisa (Nate) Wetzel of Cedar Falls, Laura (Drew) Whitehead of Waverly, and Jay Kirchhoff of Cedar Falls; and six great-grandchildren, Clare, Jillian, and Brenner Wetzel, Landon and Kendyl Whitehead, and Sully Oglesbee-Kirchhoff.

After his retirement he and Marga enjoyed traveling together and with their family, particularly their visits to Mazatlán, Mexico, and Germany, and many other memorable trips with their grandchildren. He went to the YMCA every day after his retirement to swim and exercise, which he did until he was no longer able.
