Biography

DeNae Nash, 21, of Ames, formerly of Waterloo, died on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

DeNae was born on June 3, 1999 in Rock Island, IL, to Jerry Nash and Jaquel Cook.

She graduated from East High School in 2018. DeNae attended Kansas City Community College and was currently attending Des Moines Area Community College playing Women’s Basketball for both schools.

DeNae Nash worked at the Wal-Mart Store in Boone.

Anytime DeNae walked into a room she drew in everyone with her radiant smile. She was sassy, spunky, and full of life.

She never met a stranger and was always there to do anything for her friends, family, and coworkers. She was loyal and loving with the most beautiful soul. DeNae loved her family, friends, and cat Piper with all her heart. Although she wasn’t on this earth long, she made an impact on so many people’s lives with a flash of her contagious smile, positive attitude or comforting words. As a final act of selflessness, DeNae donated her organs and tissue so others could live.

She is survived by her mother, Jaquel (William) Sherrod, Douglasville, GA; her father, Jerry (Linda) Nash, Waterloo; maternal grandmother, Joyce Cook, Las Vegas; paternal grandmother, Mary Denton, Waterloo; paternal grandfather, Eddie Denton, Waterloo; siblings: Kyra Rackley, New York, Jaron Nash, Des Moines, and Jerra Nash, Asia Nash, Leighton Nash,  Mineisha Ford, and Ebony Cook, all of Waterloo.

DeNae Nash is preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Jack D. Cook.

Praying for peace and understanding during this difficult time, no words can ease the pain but know that we as a family are praying for you during this time of grief. I pray comfort over you as the days turn into years that you know as a mother you did all you could to show DeNae the love and strength that you had within you and it is reflected through her selfness giving of her organs so that others may live, what a blessing. I am lifting your entire family up as they grieve as well. Love you always. Regina

Delainey and I were very saddened to hear of DeNae’s accident and passing. Being able to be an assistant coach for her and for Delainey to be able to be her teammate in middle school was a great experience. DeNae was always respectful and tried her hardest. When I think of her I don’t just think of a basketball player, I instantly think of Jaquel and her relationship. There wasn’t a game, tournament or weekend that she wasn’t with you, Jaquel. The love you have for each other will always be my memory of DeNae. I know she will always walk by your side. Our deepest and most heartfelt condolences. May God carry you all through this difficult time.

We loved DeNae with all of our hearts.  Her smile and laugh was very contagious and she was a genuine person.  Both qualities that we think she received from her Grandma Joyce.  May God wrap His arms around you to comfort you during these next days and weeks.  Thank you DeNae for being a part of our lives and leaving a lasting impression.  Love and prayers to Joyce and Jaquel and the rest of the family.

    Jaquel,

No words that I have can truly comfort you on the loss of Denae.  I remember her vividly from my time with you at John Deere and what a fantastic young lady with lots of promise.  Please know that Debbie and I are here for you and have an insight on dealing with the loss of a child and will be available to support you day or night in the time to come.  We are now local to you so just a short drive away if you ever need us.  Debbie especially as a mother.   May our Creator hold you and your family in his arms during this time.

Our hearts ache for you and giving you a virtual for now.

    David and Debbie Graham

I'm so sorry for this tragic news.  I was her 7th grade basketball coach at Glenview Middle School in East Moline, IL.  Danae was a great athlete and an awesome person.  I remember her soft jump shots and her willingness to fight for a rebound.   I'm appreciative of the time we spent together.  Sending my prayers to the family during this difficult time.

From the moment DeNae came into your life, till the moment she left, there was so much love and many happy memories. I hope these memories will help you get through the next few days and continue to carry her legacy forward. God bless DeNae for her selfless act of donating her organs, that have now saved three other lives. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Jaquel...Although I didn't get to see DeNae much after she became a young woman I sure remember her as a baby and growing up in the Quad Cities.  DeNae was always so sweet and so polite.  I love the fact that we could still watch her grow up from afar on Facebook.  What a beautiful woman she turned out to be.  My heart hurts so much for you Jaquel and all of your family.  It has to be wonderful to know that DeNae is going to live on through other people.  What a selfless gift.

You all will be in our thoughts and prayers in the coming days and after.  Ted & Gloria

My heart goes out to the whole family, So proud she donated her organs and she will live on in someone else!! those people will be very lucky to have such a beautiful donation from a beautiful young woman.

I was so sad to hear about Denae.  I was her 8th grade basketball coach at Glenview Middle School in East Moline Illinois.  Unfortunately I believe Denae broke her wrist and was not able play but only a couple of games.  She left such an impact on the school, the team, and myself.  She was an awesome teammate and such a wonderful young lady.  My heart and many prayers go out to her family.
