Biography

Donald J. "Don" Lohnes, Age 93, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Waterloo, died at his home Sunday, July 1, 2018. He was born December 9, 1924 in Cherokee, Iowa, son of Willard and Gladys Harrington Lohnes.

 

Don married Vernie Jean Hoffman April 6, 1946 in Waterloo. She died February 19, 2005.

 

He graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1943 and attended Photography School while serving in the U.S. Navy during WW II.

 

In 1952 Don purchased Pierce Photography Studio and operated Lohnes Photography for over 25 years. In 1967 he also began operation of American Professional Color Corporation, now American Color Imaging, selling the business in 1999 to his daughter, Lisa Lane and her husband, Mark.

 

Don was a member of Professional Photographers of America where he earned his Master and Craftsman degrees. He was inducted as an Honorary Fellow of the American Society of Photographers in 2017 and was Past President of Iowa Professional Photographers and numerous other imaging boards. He was Past President of the Waterloo Rotary Club and had been an Elder and Deacon at First Presbyterian Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church before joining Cedar Heights Community Presbyterian Church. Don was recognized as the Courier’s 8 over 80 in 2015 and was a life member of Cedar Falls AMVETS Post #49. He was inducted into the East High School Hall of Fame and was co-founder of the Hawkeye Community College Photography Program.

 

He is survived by his daughter, Jean Peters, San Diego, CA; son, David Lohnes, Des Moines, IA; daughter, Lisa (Mark) Lane, Waterloo; granddaughters, Katie (Ben) Rollins and Megan Lane; and 3 great grandchildren: Elise, Brock, and Rachel Rollins.

 

Don is preceded by wife; infant daughter, Julie Ann; brothers, Richard and Jack Lohnes; and son‑in‑law, Eric Peters.

    Don wash such a kind man, and gave special meaning to the word “Professional”!  It was a true pleasure to have known him!

    We send our sympathy to the Lohnes family in the passing of Don.  He was a cornerstone of the photography industry and the Iowa PPA.  He was a kind spoken man who will be missed.
