Biography

Donna Rosalie Hodgin was born November 28, 1931, daughter of Orville and Marion Holmes Tucker. She grew up in Cedar Falls, graduating from Cedar Falls High School in 1949. Donna then attended Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) where she earned a teaching degree. She taught second grade at Orange Township Consolidated School where she met a local farmer, Lyle Hodgin. They were married June 22, 1952.

Donna and Lyle started their married life on the family farm south of Waterloo, where they raised their three children, Joy, Randy and Jeff. In 1960, the family moved to Hudson, where they lived for 40 years. Donna worked as a receptionist for the Hudson Veterinary Clinic and as a teacher’s aide and substitute teacher at Hudson Community School. In 2000, Donna and Lyle moved to Cedar Falls where they have lived in their own home ever since.

Donna loved to read, knit and crochet. She and Lyle enjoyed traveling all around the United States in their motorhome. But, her greatest joy was to be with her family. Donna was happiest when her grandkids, and great-grandkids would visit. She loved watching their sporting events and musical performances, and she loved cooking for them. No one ever left Donna’s home hungry.

Donna died March, 1, 2019 at Sartori Memorial Hospital at the age of 87, with her family around her. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 67 years, Lyle, her children Joy (Dave) Tokheim, of Osceola ,Randy (Teresa) Hodgin, and Jeff (Cindi) Hodgin all of Hudson, her grandchildren Erin (Niels) Kongshaug, Jaime (Brent) Bonner, Brandon (Emily) Hodgin, Andrea (Brandon) Kampman, Lee (Molly) Hodgin, and Sara (Michael) Hecht, and her great-grandchildren Riesa, Emilia, and Finn Kongshaug, Addison and Lillian Bonner, Brody and Alivia Hodgin, Levi and Paige Kampman, Payton, Ellie, and Stella Hodgin and Quinnlyn Hecht. Donna will also be greatly missed by many other family members and wonderful friends.

When our daughter tried to be born 2 1/2 months early, and I needed bed rest, Donna took in our two two-year-olds, even tho they were sick at the time.   Just one of her many neighborly kind deeds.  We shared laughs when we played bridge; we shared some tense moments when her exchange student passed out.

After we moved to the country, Lyle got a good laugh when our front-door latto ch failed, the door blew open in bitter weather, and stayed open for hours.  He said we just wanted him and his furry friend to come more often to deliver fuel oil.

We were grateful to have such good babysitters so near too.  We just couldn't have hand picked better neighbors, or a better neighborhood.

    Hugs to you all.

Miss Tucker, as I first knew her, was my second grade teacher at Orange (1951-1952).  She was a sweet, kind teacher that everyone loved.  I am sorry to hear of her passing.  My condolences to the family.

Donna was a quality person who always had a smile on her face.  She was kind and fun and a genuinely nice person.  I new her as a child.  Her house held down the other end of Sunny Lane from ours.  And she was a sunny type of person.  So saddened to hear of your loss.   Jan Gardner Madson

I'm so sorry to learn of Donna's passing. She always made me feel special as a child and young adult. I will never forget how I felt so privileged when I would sneak over for popcorn with Donna and "Popcorn Lyle" whenever I was visiting my grandparents next door. Love to Lyle and all of the family. Such amazing people!
