Doris Butler, 90, of Waterloo, died Friday, September 7, 2018 at Friendship Village.

Doris was born October 26, 1927 in Greene, Iowa the daughter of Garth and Hazel Wright Butler. She graduated from Greene High School in 1946; attended Wheaton College 1946‑47; and West Suburban Hospital from 1946‑50 where she obtained her RN.

Doris was a Registered Nurse in Eugene, Oregon for 8 years. She moved back to Waterloo in 1965 where she taught at Allen College and worked as a RN at Allen Memorial Hospital. She then worked at Schoitz and Covenant Hospitals where she held various management positions and served as an instructor and administrator. She retired from nursing after 37 years as the Director of Special Services in 1987.

She was a faithful and active member of Walnut Ridge Baptist Church. She was a piano player for many years and was known for being the player “who played the extra notes.” Doris loved to help people and was involved with many things at Friendship Village. She would say herself that she was “busier than a cranberry’s merchant.” She also sported a collection of cool shoes. Doris was a detailed storyteller and could keep people engaged in her stories for long periods of time. Most of all, Doris had a servant’s heart.

Doris is survived by a brother John Butler of Madison, Wisconsin; a sister-in-law Shirley Butler of Greene. She is also survived by three nephews: Phil (Jeannette) Butler of Colfax, Dave Butler of Madison, Wisconsin; and Steve (Caralyn) Butler of Park View; two nieces: Janell (Frank) Wojtowicz of New Brighton, Minnesota and Elizabeth (Charles) Clute, Snellville, Georgia; four great nephews: Charles (Lydia) Clute, Jonathan Clute, Christopher Clute, and Thomas Butler; three great nieces: Holly (Ryan) Jochims, Melinda (Nicholas) Harshbarger, Hannah Butler; and four great-great nephews and nieces: Trey Jochims, Brianna Jochims, Bethany Clute and Ivy Clute.

Doris is preceded in death by her parents, a brother Paul Butler, sister‑in‑law Gail Butler, niece Kristin Butler, and great‑nephew Dale Butler.

Doris was a great friend when I lived in Waterloo 2010-2015, and I can't wait to see her in Heaven.  I trust her family will continue the Godly legacy she left behind.
