Janet L. Urbanek, 65, of Hudson, died Sunday, January 10, 2021 at Select Specialty Hospital in Des Moines.

She was born July 19, 1955 in Brainerd, MN, daughter of Lloyd W. and Elsie Adelmund Church.

Jan graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1973. She received her bachelor's in education from UNI in 1987.

She married her high school sweetheart, the “All-American Boy,” Mark A. Urbanek December 1, 1974 at Faith Lutheran Church in Parkersburg.

Jan was a teacher for Dike-New Hartford Schools for 29 years, retiring in 2016.

She was a devout member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Hudson where she was a member of the praise team and the church choir for many years. She volunteered for hospice for several years and was the Iowa Hospice Volunteer of Year in 2009.

Jan spent her summers as a child in Nisswa, MN at her father’s cabins on Lower Cullen. She loved taking her family there every summer. It became a tradition to walk into the lake fully clothed. She loved her time at the beach with her grandchildren. They always planned a special themed party compete entertainment and three-course meal.

Family, biological or not, were everything to her. She loved loving others in any way she could. Most of the time she showed her love through her amazing cooking and baking abilities.

Jan touched the lives of many children as an elementary school teacher. She touched the lives of many. She taught 6th and 4th grades at Dike-New Hartford Elementary School. She loved hosting a yearly feast, building bridges, and snow dancing with her students.

After retirement, she continued to lesson plan for her grandchildren. She opened “Grandma School,” and passed on all of the precious memories she wanted her grandchildren to have forever.

Jan had a strong faith. She looked forward to the day she would get to meet the Lord. She eagerly looked forward to reuniting with her parents and grandparents at the cabin by the lake in Heaven.

She is survived by her husband, Mark Urbanek of Hudson; two sons, Justin (Kris) Urbanek of Cedar Falls, and Joe (Katy) Urbanek of Tripoli; six grandchildren, Alex, Taylor, Mac, Drew, Bode, and Trey Urbanek; brother, Jeff (Angie) Church of Parkersburg; two sisters-in-law, Deb (Dean) Schumacher of Tripoli, and Cindy (Don) Knock of New Hartford; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded by her parents; grandparents; and her mother- and father-in-law.

With sadness in my heart, I want to express my deepest sympathy to ALL the Urbaneks!

I truly feel blessed to have had the pleasure of knowing a kind, loving and amazing educator.  Her smile was genuine and warm, her love for her students went above and beyond, giving each of them a sense of self worth and caring for others.  Although, our paths did not cross often, I always felt seen and heard with kindness.  I'm sure she is dancing in heaven with those who have waited her arrival...a joyous celebration!  You will forever be remembered and missed Jan!

God's blessings to family today and in the days to come.

I am so very sorry for your loss.  The thing that stands out in my mind about Jan is that she always had a smile on her face.  Losing someone so close is certainly difficult but hopefully the many great memories you have made together as a family will sustain you in the days, weeks and months to come. You are all in my thoughts and prayers
