To the family

Jeff Ersland, 64, of Evansdale, IA, died as a result of an accident at his home on Tuesday, October 2, 2018.

He was born on January 17, 1954 in Waterloo, IA, the son of Gerald G. and Maxine G. Baish Ersland. Jeff graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1972. He married Cheryl "Sherry" Elaine May on May 21, 1977, at First Presbyterian Church in Waterloo. He worked for John Deere for 32 years in various departments from the foundry to skill trades where he worked until his retirement in 2004.

Jeff was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the UAW Local #838 where he had served on the Board, the Agricultural Implement Council, and was a union steward for over 20 years. He also served on the volunteer fire department at John Deere.

Jeff was a wild and free spirit. He was a Harley Davidson enthusiast and started riding motorcycles when he was 14. He was considered by some to be a Harley encyclopedia, often times trying to explain the origin of different engine parts to anyone willing to listen. His motorcycle was a member of the family. Jeff and Sherry attended the Sturgis Rally many times and often traveled to Colorado.

Jeff had a tough exterior and was a real man’s man. He was a body builder and enjoyed lifting weights, ultimately trying out for Mr. Iowa. He also spent a lot of time tinkering in the garage, either on his motorcycle or other projects that he came across. On the inside, though, Jeff was a softy. He loved to talk to people. Most importantly, Jeff loved to spend time with his family. Telling stories to his grandchildren was special time for him and for them.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry of Evansdale; his three children: Tina (Brian Wink) Foster of Monticello, IA, Jacob (Katie Beckheyer) Ersland of San Francisco, CA, and Terra (Josh Schmidt) Ersland Schmidt of Delano, MN; three grandchildren: Holly Huss, Andrew Buck and Lincoln Schmidt; a brother, Gerald (Cindy) Ersland of Waterloo; a sister, Tammy (Pat) Hayes of Waterloo; and former son-in-law, Ken (Sara) Huss of Cedar Rapids, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

My heart is filled with sadness and my eyes are filled with tears.  Try to fill your thoughts of the greatest memories to balance the grief in your heart.  No body knows, nobody feels the emptiness in your heart but you. Take the time to process this shift in your life as you approach spending the rest of it without Jeff. Your other half, your significant other, the man of your dreams, the love of your life as well as the man you planned to grow old with.  So so sorry of  Jeff's early departure. He was such a nice guy. So the saying is true. The best ones go first!

After I read about Jeff in the paper I was shocked for sure. Graduated with Jeff and his wife Sherry.... Both wonderful people. Known Jeff for a long time. Not a close friend but a good one. Every time we would run in to Jeff or Jeff and Sherry, that smile would appear. He was a hell of a guy and will be missed by many. Very strong person. God Bless Jeff and Sherry and the entire Family. You all are in our thought a prayers for sure. Hang in there and stay strong. I hope that our Daughter Bree's and Jeff's  paths cross in the here after. Very few people in my life did I respect as much as I did Jeff....

    God Bless you all....

So very sorry to hear about Jeff's passing.  Even though I wont be there I want all of you to know I've been thinking and praying for ya'll.  I would also like to thank you for the wonderful video.  It brought tears, sadness, memories and joy.  It gave me an insight into a life I wish I could have been more of.  When I see his beautiful smile it makes me have to smile back,  which tells me he enjoyed his family, friends, and life.

He will always be in my heart.

I was shocked to hear of Jeff's sudden passing and it comes with a sad heart. He always had a big smile and a warm heart throughout the years and never at a loss for kind words. I used to walk school with Jeff when were six years old. I was new to the neighborhood and we became friends. I was very thankful to him for that as he made me feel welcome. He will be deeply missed and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I am so sorry to hear about Jeff. I wanted to share a quick story with you. Growing up I remember hitting golf balls in the open field between our homes on Miner. On occasion I'd have an errant shot end up in your yard. I'd always sneak down there to retrieve my golf ball, hoping to not be caught by Jeff. I was always scared of him. After a few years I happened to have a conversation with Jeff. That conversation led to many more. For quite some time I would make a point to stop by and say hello when I was back in the old neighborhood. I always enjoyed talking to Jeff about cars, motorcycles, etc. He was a very kind man and he will be missed. I send all my best to you and the rest of your family.
