Biography

Steven Michael Murphy of Waterloo (55) passed away at home on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 15, 1963 in Elkader, son of Michael and Dorothy (Welsh) Murphy.

He graduated from Columbus Catholic High School in 1981. Steve married his high school sweetheart, Jane Carr, on August 10, 1985 after completing a degree in finance at Loras College. Steve was an avid musician through high school and college, performing on the alto saxophone.

He got his start in insurance as a claims adjuster for Progressive. Earlier this year he completed a career of over twenty years at Encompass Insurance. As a Sales Education Manager, Steve traveled around the country teaching and was known and loved for his colorful storytelling and sense of humor.

Steve was always generous with his time and talents and volunteered for many local organizations over the years. He was a past treasurer and chair for more than one chapter of Ducks Unlimited; he loved to help organize the parade for My Waterloo Days; and West High’s choir, marching band, and theatre department often benefited from his skills and advocacy. Steve was also a past president of the Sunrise Exchange Club.

Boy Scout Troop 1 had a special place in Steve’s heart. While bringing up his sons, both of whom earned the rank of Eagle Scout, Steve spent many weekends and weeks camping in all weathers with the boys and dads of Troop 1. He traveled as a scoutmaster to Philmont Scout Ranch and Boundary Waters with his sons and other scouts. Steve loved to be outdoors, whether it was hunting, fishing, or hiking with the many close friends he shared laughs with throughout the years.

More than anything else, Steve was a family man. He worked tirelessly on behalf of his family, and still always had time to care, teach, and laugh. He also always had time to throw his tools in the back of his truck and help anybody who needed a hand.

Preceded in death by: his parents.

Survived by: his devoted wife Jane (Carr) Murphy and his three children, of whom he was exceptionally proud—Kevin, Daniel (Narmina) and Hannah. His special mother-in-law, Donna “The Biddy” Carr. Also, his three siblings, William (Shelley) Murphy, Colleen (Chuck) Knapp, and Cathy (Andy) Mills; four sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. Lastly, Steve is survived by three very well-behaved Labradors: Faith, Hope, and Joy.

Steve was a breath of fresh air at Encompass Insurance.  When he spoke of his family his face would light up and there was love and pride in his voice.  I was stunned and saddened to hear of Steve's transition.  No one can ever replace the amazing person Steve was.  My thoughts are with your family.  May you see Steve in your dreams.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Steve was a good neighbor. We enjoyed many nice campfires with him and Jane at the Rigel's, with lots of good jokes and conversations. He was always willing to help those who needed it. I will remeber him for his jokes, lively conversations and spirited jolly nature. My deepest condolances to Jane and the kids.

Although I never met his family, I felt like I knew each and every one of you.  Steve always had a wonderful, funny story about his family which he adored.  He will be so very missed, but I know Heaven is celebrating.

Nobody could light up a room and make people laugh and smile like Steve.  Every time he called or swung by to visit it was a treat to talk to him.  I always enjoyed listening to the tales of his life outside of work with the family, hunting, or the dogs.  I will genuinely miss Steve.  The world was a better place with you and I will always appreciate the honor I had of knowing and working with you.  My deepest sympathies to the Murphy family.  My thoughts are with you all.

Steve and I had some very fun times hunting ducks, pheasant and turkeys.  At the end of the hunt there was always a story.  I have many of them storied in my memory.  Our path changed directions over the years but I still called Steve Murphy a true friend.  Tape and Guts my friend.  God speed
